Tunnel Road and Grizzly Peak, May 26th 2003

After getting a bunch of cleaning done on Memorial Day (such a wonderful thing to have a day off!) I went for a little ride. I picked up a stock tail light I bought from a guy on Craigs List, then bounced up to the ridge. This ride is one of the reasons I love the bay area. It's short, so can be done under time pressure (allow one hour round trip from down town Berkeley, counting traffic), and is stunningly gorgeous. I have yet to actually pull this ride off during my lunch hour, but I'm sure it can be done.

They just finished repaving the lower part of Tunnel Road. It really needed it, but it's perfect now. There's one curve that has water running across it (always) so watch out for that. There's often more construction going on, so there can be some gravel on the road, but there wasn't much at all today.

I've traced out the Tunnel Road portion of this panorama in blue. The pictures aren't so good, but you get the idea.

The highlighted section is what you can see in the view above

This is the view from half way up Tunnel Road. Names for all you non-Bay Area folk.

The Wall is a well known resting spot to look at all the pretty bikes (not to mention the pretty bay...)

This is the entire loop that I think you could pull off during lunch (starting and ending at my work)

I would definitely recommend going counter clockwise around this loop. It's much nicer going up tunnel road than it is going down. ;)

Enjoy!

(Many thanks to Mapquest for the maps)
