In the northeast of France, in Alsace, I stayed in a small town called Colmar. Nearby is the village of Ribeauvillè, and just above the town on the hillside is the Chateau Ribeaupierre. Or at least, the ruins of the 12th c. castle. As I walked up there, I felt myself transferred into a world of ancient history, and imagined all the things that must have happened 800 years ago in the very spot I was walking. How many people must have eaten lunch in the very spot I ate, overlooking the same vinyards? Wine has been grown in the region since the 1st century AD, even though they weren't going to build the castle for another 1000 years.
